The parents are here

Skype is an amazing thing. By bringing video chat into the same easy of use realm as instant messaging it becomes just as normal and casual and thus so does seeing other people’s faces on the screen. I’ve video chatted with my parents at least once every two weeks since I’ve been in Japan. Though if she wanted to go all Jewish on me my mom could probably point out droughts longer than two weeks. Thankfully I’m pretty sure my parents are Wiccan. The result of a method of communication that carries not only vocal inflection but nonverbal cues (albeit squished, compressed, and time shifted) is that I don’t feel the 6,600 mile gap from my house to theirs. What I’m really doing here is trying to offset my guilt for not being jumping off the walls excited at their arrival. I am very happy to see them of course, but now I’m turned into the host when I’m not completely familiar with the home. Hopefully they won’t read this until they get home, because the last thing I need is a Wiccan Mom guilt trip.(P.S. My parents are Catholic. They’re in a bowling league with Jesus. No not that Jesus.)
