On Dimensions-
I’m capturing two dimensions of a 3 dimensional existence. Photography captures the moment. One perspective of the moment.
Video and film can capture a third dimension, time. They can capture sound.
What happens when you turn a 3 dimensional object into a 2 dimensional one? When you strip it of detail, or a quantifiable aspect? The mug beside me has a depth, a height, a width. In a photo it has a height and width, which can be changed to any dimension.
What happens when I etch it into another surface using the laser cutter? I take away it’s reality and give it a new one. I say your new depth is based on a new rule, your brightness. Sometimes this results in an etching that mimicks the structure and shape of the original object, othertimes it does not.
Is this an adequate way of returning the loss of detail that results with modern imaging processes.
People have buddy icons in place of photos. They have avatars on second life. That’s an entirely different entitiy representing the visual aspect of a person. What if I just want to change one aspect of me, one dimension.
Or bring that dimension to light.
On Memory-
The mosaics tried to force many moments into one. So did the multiples. Does quantity make the moment clearer? Does it improve the memory? At what point is there enough information to give the same value as a memory.
Memories leave behind aspects of a situation. What data do you leave behind. Can a digital or photographic record ever be the same thing as a memory. WE call it computer memory but it’s more precise than the human mind will ever be. It’s absolute.
Also I know the issue of surface (body and object) needs to be discussed. I’ll get there.
