and not stay up until 1am every night, even though that’s all my body wants to do.
Today I actually started using Japanese in little ways, little ways that turned out useful. I started saying basic sentences to one of my JTE’s who laughed the way you would if someone said “Go train, we are going!” It was humorous in the beginning of my journey through Japan to try little bits of Japanese or have to communicate with my students through signal flags and small fires, but now it’s growing tedious, and it’s not just me that’s realizing it. Today I walked into the grocery store with a large group of my students hanging out in front. They asked me some question and laughed, then another student added something which made the entire group go crazy with laughter. I had no response but to smile as if I knew what they were talking about and walk away. This only added fuel to the laughter fire. They could’ve been asking me if I eat condoms and all I could do was give a wry smile. For the record I gave up on my condom diet years ago.
While waiting for the train I ran into a few students from before. They asked simple questions, something about a vending machine. The student kept repeating it over and over as if I was deaf. What I think he was trying to ask is if we had vending machines in America. I only pieced it together once the train had started moving.
Japanese wasn’t a requirement for this job, but it definitely belongs on the “recommended system requirements” list.
In other news I uploaded photos to Flickr today, more to come soon.
